Workshops: Painting like the old masters the Italian Renaissance method

Painting like the old masters…

• Better for the environment: no plastics, solvents or other non-perishable fillers
• It’s healthier for you
• The pigments (colours) are more concentrated and therefor more intense
• The paintings will last for centuries

• How to paint skin, in Tempera, like the old Italian Masters painted human skin.
• Making a Fayoum portrait with encaustiek.
• Chiaro’scuro painting (whites on blacks with tempera).
• Making Tempera grassa painting alla prima.
• Making Tempera Grassa, painting tratteggio.
• Making Gesso and glue paint.

Using special and traditional methods, they were very good at painting the semi-transparancy of skin, and painting the required expression on a face.

We are going to practise these skills.

We will start making our own binder, tempering pigments and making our own paint.

After some theory we shall mainly paint a lot, on a wooden panel which I already have prepared for you.

It’s an intensive and interesting workshop. Therefore the number of participants is a maximum of ten.

you can attent this workshop with, or without any knowledge or skills in painting.
